The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve pages 125-164.

Summary:

Kathryn and Mattie had been wondering if they would have a funeral for Jack since his body had not found yet. Later, they had a memorial day instead of a funeral. Kathryn was not strong enough to see all the pilot rows who had never even met her husband standing during the memorial day. She too, saw many of her students who had even graduated but came back just for this event. People still thought that it was a suicide. Kathryn kept recalling the past when Jack was home. She had always thought that they had the same fate, being orphans, not since they were born, but left when they were quite young. Even though Kathryn's parents were present, they had never taken care of her. Julia did. Her parents drank a lot and did not behave like adults. Likewise, Jack used to tell her that his mother died of cancer when he was nine and his father then lost his consciousness as a person since. So, he felt like he was on his own. During the interview, Kathryn ran to the beach at the back of her house to sit there and be alone. Then, Robert came and sit beside her. They talked about a few things before a cameraman took an opportunity to take their shot which surprised them, of course. This gave Kathryn her confidence back to tell all the interviewers that she was sure that it was not suicide and she would not answer anymore question until her lawyer is present. One of them asked, "do you know about his mother?" She answered him confidently that she was dead. This was the moment that she discovered that Jack had been lying to her all this time. His mother was not dead. Instead, she was taken care in a nursery. Also, later she found out that Jack did not spend his last night in the crew apartment. It was found that he had made a reservation for two at a restaurant for that night. It was also still unknown where he was. Kathryn was surprised with this. She tried to ensure herself that he would not be unfaithful to her as she thought that it was not his characteristic.

Response:

How sad! Kathryn found out that her husband made a reservation for two at a restaurant? Could he have been unfaithful to her all these years? His behavior was sometimes strange. Ahh, this agitate me! How could he be so bad to Kathryn when she had always cared and loved him very much? I hope this is not going to be what I am going to read next because I do not like such stories. Also, I wonder why Jack had lied to Kathryn about his mother? Was he too embarassed to let Kathryn know his mother? Why was Jack behaving so strangely? It seems to me that he might have a mental problem that Kathryn had not known. Oh, I guess i begin to dislike Jack. I used to think that he was such a good husband and father but this opinion has changed now. Hmm.. But I do not really want to judge him now because I just reached half of the story! Hehe..
