The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve pages 199-304.

Summary:

Kathryn and Robert departed to London the very next day. When they reached London, Kathryn went to Muire Boland's house alone almost immediately. When she knocked on the door, a tall dark-haired woman with a baby boy on her hip opened the door. Kathryn noticed the baby's eyes which were slight different colors, just like Mattie's which were inherited from Jack. She knew then the woman was really Muire Boland. There was also a little girl in the house playing construction blocks. Kathryn saw a photo of Jack in a faded polo shirt with the baby and the girl seemingly at a beach. It was when she found out more about Jack's relationship with Muire Boland. They had actually been married for four and a half years. Five and a half years ago, they met at the airline and fell in love. Later, Muire got pregnant and Jack wanted to get married at a Catholic church. Kathryn thought, he had never been to a church for a long time. She found out that Jack had been a very different person when he was with her and Muire. Muire had known all about Kathryn and Mattie, while Kathryn had not known anything about Muire and her children until now. Muire was cold to Kathryn. Kathryn could not really believe what she had just found out. She then wandered around London, went to a pub and get soaked in the rain as she had forgotten her umbrella at Muire's house. She came back to the hotel at one in the morning. Robert was anxious about her. That night, Kathryn stayed in Robert's room not wanting to be alone in her room. She told him she wanted to go home as soon as possible, so Robert had to change the ticket time the next morning. Kathryn felt better by then. They were having breakfast together when Muire came in hurry and apologized to Kathryn for being cruel to her the last evening. She told Kathryn everything. She said it was not a suicide which Kathryn had believed in before. Someone planted the bomb on the plane to discredit the IRA since Jack was involved in the matter with Muire. Both Muire and Jack were Catholic Irish and Jack was invited to join by Muire's brother. By this incident, Kathryn found out that Robert had been using her to find out more about Jack's activities. Muire was hurrying as she was trying to escape but in the end she was arrested and stayed in a jail in Ireland. Kathryn had not yet exposed about the other family Jack had had to Mattie unless it was exposed to the public. She had also thrown her wedding ring into the sea in Malin Head where Jack's plane had been drowned. Kathryn and Mattie had quite passed the bad moments. They tried to live normally even though it was rather impossible. They were fishing when Robert came to visit. He apologized for taking the wrong decision. He said, he wanted to tell Kathryn at the first time but he was afraid he might lose her.

Response:

This is the end of the story. The ending was rather sad to me):
I still can't really believe that Jack had another family in London for four and a half years yet Kathryn had not suspect anything! Poor Kathryn for being cheated on while she had given all her trust to her husband. Jack was such a bad husband! Oh, how I hate him now! Tsk. Despite his reluctant to leave Kathryn and Mattie he was still very bad for cheating on them! How sad..:'(
I did not really expect for the ending to turn this way. I thought it might be better... However, I admire Kathryn for being a very strong woman! Regardless everything that had happened to her, she still had the courage to live her life and to take the positive sides of Jack though sometimes she still wondered if she could really forgive a man who had betrayed her. I am happy for her that she could make it up with Mattie again since Mattie was rather cold to her. I guess, she blamed Kathryn for what had happened. Also, I am actually quite contented when I got to know that Muire was arrested. She stayed with the terrorists in the jail! She worthed it, anyhow. However, Kathryn wondered where Muire's children were. I pity them for having such a bad mother. I actually like her children. From the description, I think they were cute. Furthermore, they were nice and innocent, don't they?:D
